In a surprising move, former Union Minister Milind Deora has resigned from the Congress and joined the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Deora criticized his former party for its treatment of industrialists and its focus on opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the press conference, sitting alongside Chief Minister Shinde, Deora expressed his disappointment with the Congress party's transformation over the years. He stated, "It is sad that there is a lot of difference between the Congress my father joined in 1968 and the one I joined in 2004. Had the Congress focused on constructive issues, suggestions, merit, and ability, then Mr. Shinde and I would not be here today."
Furthermore, Deora highlighted the Congress party's alleged mistreatment of industrialists and businessmen. He accused the party of labeling them as "anti-nationals" and of abusing them. This criticism comes as a significant blow to the Congress, as Deora emphasized that the party, which had once led economic reforms, has now lost its way.
Deora also noted that instead of offering suggestions on how to take the country forward, the Congress now seems solely focused on opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies. This change in approach, according to Deora, has pushed him towards joining the Shiv Sena faction.
Deora's decision to switch sides comes as no surprise, as he had been counted among the disgruntled section of the Congress for some time. His stronghold, the Mumbai South seat, was claimed by the Shiv Sena UBT faction led by Uddhav Thackeray. Despite facing defeat to the Sena's Arvind Sawant in the last two general elections, Deora had hoped the seat would remain with the Congress.
Some critics of Deora's move argue that it was simply timed to take attention away from Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra, which commenced in Manipur today. However, Deora maintains that his decision was driven by the desire to prioritize development.
With Deora's departure, the Congress party is faced with the potential loss of an influential member and a significant setback in Mumbai politics. The Shiv Sena, on the other hand, gains a prominent new face who brings with him years of experience in national politics.
As Deora settles into his new role within the Shiv Sena, many will be watching closely to see how his decision impacts both parties and the political landscape in Maharashtra.
