News Article:
In the realm of politics, personal beliefs and values often shape the agendas and actions of elected officials. This holds true for Mike Johnson, the newly appointed speaker of the House, who is making his mark as a fervent advocate for the religious right. A recent article in Slate Magazine highlights Johnson's deep religious convictions and explores how his commitment to traditional marriage has influenced his political career.

Johnson, a Southern Baptist, leaves no doubt about his religious beliefs. He hosts a podcast with his wife, in which they offer analysis of current events from a Christian perspective. Johnson firmly rejects the concept of separating church and state, asserting that the establishment clause of the U.S. Constitution exists to protect religion rather than create a divide. Furthermore, he frequently delivers sermons with explicit political undertones at churches. From 2004 to 2012, Johnson served on the board of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Throughout his career, Johnson has been closely aligned with the priorities of the religious right. Early on, he worked as senior legal counsel and spokesperson for the conservative Christian legal organization now known as the Alliance Defending Freedom. In this capacity, he took on "religious liberty" cases, including opposing the decriminalization of gay sex and defending same-sex marriage bans. Subsequently, he defended Louisiana's strict abortion law, represented the group behind Kentucky's Ark Encounter theme park, and fervently supported legislation that would protect individuals who discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community.

However, it is Johnson's stance on traditional marriage that showcases his old-fashioned religious conservatism most prominently. In 1999, Johnson and his wife, Kelly, entered into a "covenant marriage," a form of marriage that requires premarital counseling and a binding contract stipulating marriage can only be dissolved under limited circumstances such as abuse or imprisonment. This alternative approach to marriage gained attention as Johnson and his wife become the "poster couple" for covenant marriage, advocating for its adoption by others.

The notion of covenant marriage was met with mixed reactions. While some saw it as a positive effort to strengthen the institution of marriage, others argued that it infringed upon personal freedom and perpetuated outdated societal norms. The passage of covenant marriage laws in Louisiana was viewed as a victory for conservative lawmakers pushing back against a perceived breakdown of traditional family values. However, over time, interest in covenant marriage dwindled, and it never gained widespread popularity.

Despite the fade in popularity of covenant marriage, Johnson remained steadfast in his belief that the erosion of marriage posed a significant threat to society. He continued to champion the idea that a healthy and prosperous community relies on the strength of the institution of marriage. Johnson's views on marriage aligned with the broader conservative "marriage movement" of the late '90s and early '00s, which sought to combat divorce rates through various means, including teaching healthy communication in relationships and providing public funding for marital counseling.

As Johnson assumes his role as the new speaker of the House, his faith and commitment to conservative Christian values remain resolute. He has made it clear that he will prioritize conservative Christian measures and continue to champion causes aligned with the religious right. Johnson's ability to present himself as charming and wholesome, while advocating for more radical ideals, is reminiscent of his approach to the politics of his own marriage.

With Johnson at the helm, it is anticipated that the influence of the religious right will be felt strongly in the current political landscape. As the nation continues to grapple with issues at the intersection of religion, politics, and personal beliefs, Johnson's ascent to speaker of the House marks a notable shift towards prioritizing conservative Christian values in the halls of power.
