In a swift response to a controversial social media post, a Republican lawmaker in Michigan has lost his committee assignment and staff. House Speaker Joe Tate, a Democrat who is Black, made the decision in order to prevent the House from becoming a platform for "racist, hateful and bigoted speech."

State Representative Josh Schriver, a white lawmaker representing parts of Oakland and Macomb counties, had shared a post on a platform formerly known as Twitter (referred to as X) that featured a map of the world with Black figures outnumbering white figures, accompanied by the phrase, "The great replacement!" This phrase is linked to a conspiracy theory asserting a plot to diminish the influence of white individuals.

While Schriver will still be able to vote on the House floor, Tate removed him from a committee and placed his staff members under the supervision of the House Business Office. However, his staff can still assist constituents.

Schriver had defended his social media post, stating, "I'm opposed to racists, race baiters, and victim politics... What I find strange is the agenda to demoralize and reduce the white portion of our population." In response, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, denounced his post as "abhorrent rhetoric" in a statement released on Friday, emphasizing the need to stand united against those who seek to sow racial division.

The consequences for Schriver come just days after his controversial post surfaced. Elected to a two-year term in 2022, he now faces the repercussions of his actions.

While Schriver has not immediately responded to requests for comment, his removal from his committee assignment and the subsequent scrutiny from both House Speaker Tate and Governor Whitmer serve as a strong message against promoting racist ideologies within the political arena. Michigan continues its ongoing battle against racial division and seeks to ensure that the House remains a platform for open dialogue and progress, free from prejudice.

This incident highlights the growing importance of responsible social media use for public officials, as well as the need for vigilance in addressing and combatting racism wherever it arises.
