BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. - The Matts Creek wildfire, which ignited on Sunday night, has rapidly expanded, reaching a burned area of 5,148 acres as of Friday morning, according to officials. The fire has been fueled by dry weather and strong winds, resulting in its massive spread across the wilderness near Big Island.

Fire crews, comprising 8 fire crews and 3 helicopters, have been tirelessly battling the blaze since it was first reported. Despite their efforts, the fire's containment remains at a mere 2% as of Thursday. The U.S. Forest Service is yet to provide an update on its containment.

The billowing clouds of smoke generated by the wildfire have had significant implications for the local community. Many schools in the area have been forced to close due to poor air quality, while the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has issued a health alert for several counties, including Rockbridge, Bedford, Amherst, and Nelson.

The smoke, carried by prevailing winds, is projected to shift northward into Rockbridge County on Friday. This change in weather patterns could further exacerbate the situation.

Concerning property damage, officials have assured that there are presently no private lands or homes in immediate jeopardy from the wildfire. The fire is contained within the National Forest and Blue Ridge Parkway lands, spanning both Bedford and Rockbridge counties.

The proximity of the wildfire has led to temporary closures and restrictions in the affected areas. The Blue Ridge Parkway has been closed from Milepost 66.3 to Milepost 85.9, inconveniencing travelers. Furthermore, all trails within the James River Face Wilderness, including the Appalachian Trail, have been temporarily closed to public use.
