In a tragic incident on Saturday, a massive pileup involving 35 vehicles took place on Interstate 5 in Kern County, California, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries. The pileup occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, leading to the closure of both sides and diversion of traffic, as reported by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

The exact details of the incident have not been disclosed by Caltrans, and attempts to reach out to the California Highway Patrol and Kern County Fire Department for comments were unsuccessful.

Emergency responders were alerted to the collision report at approximately 7:30 a.m., following which they swiftly arrived at the scene, according to local NBC affiliate KGET 17 News in Bakersfield.

The pileup occurred amidst foggy weather conditions, commonly known as Tule fog, prevalent in the San Joaquin Valley. This type of fog arises when moisture-laden soil is covered by a thick mist after rainfall.

Reports indicate that the pileup involved a total of 17 vehicles and 18 big rigs, causing extensive damage and disruption. Battalion Chief Jim Calhoun of the Fire Department informed KBAK that two individuals lost their lives, while the conditions of the remaining nine injured individuals remain unknown. They have been transported to the hospital for treatment.

The authorities continue to investigate the incident, aiming to ascertain the causes and potential contributing factors that led to this devastating pileup on Interstate 5. With visibility considerably impaired by the dense fog, it is crucial for drivers to exercise caution and adhere to recommended guidelines during such weather conditions.

As the community mourns the loss of lives and prays for the recovery of those injured, authorities and emergency services are working diligently to manage the aftermath of this tragic event.
