The commission stated that it lacked jurisdiction over the matter, as reported by Boston 25 News.
This dismissal comes as opponents of Trump sought to prevent him from appearing on election ballots following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. However, the panel's decision means that Trump's eligibility for the Republican presidential nomination in Massachusetts remains intact.
Amy Carnevale, Chair of the Republican Party of Massachusetts, applauded the commission's decision and criticized the challenge as an "ill-conceived effort" to weaken American democracy. Carnevale expressed her support for allowing actual voters to choose their nominee, emphasizing the importance of upholding the democratic process.
Massachusetts joins a list of more than a dozen states that have challenged Trump's eligibility to appear on primary or general election ballots. Back in December, the Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Trump from the state's ballots for the 2024 elections. Trump has since appealed the ruling, which is now under consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Additionally, the former president filed an appeal against Maine's secretary of state's decision to bar him from the state's primary ballot. However, Maine's Supreme Judicial Court has decided not to address the matter until the U.S. Supreme Court reaches a decision on the related case from Colorado.
As the 2024 campaign trail unfolds, this decision by the Massachusetts State Ballot Law Commission marks another step in Trump's journey towards securing the Republican presidential nomination. With more states yet to weigh in on his eligibility, the ultimate decision will ultimately rest in the hands of voters across the country.
