Manhunt for Tennessee Fugitive Intensifies as Reward Hits $100,000
In a relentless search for 42-year-old Kenneth DeHart, who is accused of fatally shooting a deputy and injuring another in East Tennessee, the Blount County Sheriff's Office has upped the reward to $100,000 for any information leading to his arrest. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has issued warrants charging DeHart with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm for the shootings that took place on February 8.
DeHart, who remains at large, has now become the focus of a statewide Blue Alert and has been added to the TBI's Most Wanted list. Law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal levels are collaborating in an extensive manhunt to capture him.
While the search for DeHart continues, authorities are making headway in tracking down his alleged associates. DeHart's girlfriend, 32-year-old Carrie Matthews, was arrested on February 8. According to an arrest warrant obtained by NewsNation affiliate WATE, Matthews received a call from DeHart and promptly warned him that the police were at her residence questioning her. Additionally, DeHart's brother, 41-year-old Marcus DeHart, was arrested on February 9. Both Matthews and Marcus DeHart are currently in custody, facing charges of "accessory after the fact." Marcus DeHart's bond is set at $1 million, and he is scheduled to appear in Blount County General Sessions Court on Monday afternoon.
The incident leading to the manhunt unfolded when deputies initiated a traffic stop on an SUV suspected of erratic driving. The driver, identified as Kenneth DeHart, refused to exit the vehicle, prompting deputies to use a stun gun, which proved ineffective. DeHart then opened fire on the officers, injuring Deputy Shelby Eggers in the leg. Deputy Greg McCowan, 43, was also shot and tragically succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. McCowan, a decorated hero who joined the force in 2020, leaves behind a fiancée, children, and grandchildren.
Speaking directly to the suspect, TBI Director David Rausch assured that DeHart would be brought to justice. Authorities are urging anyone with Ring camera or security footage that could provide clues about DeHart's whereabouts to come forward.
The search for Kenneth DeHart continues to ramp up in intensity, with the increased reward of $100,000 serving as an incentive for anyone with crucial information to aid in his capture. As law enforcement agencies pool their resources and Redouble their efforts, the hope remains that DeHart will be apprehended swiftly, bringing closure to the community and justice for the fallen deputy.
