In response to severe flooding caused by a recent rainstorm, Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. of Johnston, Rhode Island has issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents living on Belfield Drive. The neighborhood, known for its susceptibility to flooding, found itself inundated with water, prompting concerns for the safety of both residents and first responders.

With the water levels refusing to recede and more rain anticipated, Mayor Polisena consulted with the police, fire, and Department of Public Works (DPW) in making the decision to evacuate. The town announced via a Facebook post that the evacuation order was necessary due to the inaccessible nature of the area, preventing emergency personnel from reaching affected residents.

The flooding situation proved dire, as the town shared that both police and fire military vehicles became incapacitated as a result of the excessive water. As a result, after the completion of the evacuation process, the town announced that police and fire personnel would be withdrawn from the area to prioritize the safety of residents and emergency responders.

To assist affected residents, Johnston town officials stated they would provide hotel accommodations until Wednesday. This temporary arrangement aims to ensure that residents have a safe and comfortable place to stay until the flooding subsides and they can return to their homes.

Mayor Polisena also revealed plans to construct a makeshift road to the neighborhood. This effort is intended to facilitate access to the area and alleviate the challenges faced by emergency services in responding to future incidents.
