Man Fatally Shot by Police After Attempted Entry with Gun at Downtown Austin Bar

AUSTIN, Texas - Tragedy struck in Downtown Austin late Saturday night when a man was shot and killed by police after attempting entry into a bar while carrying a gun. Several others were also injured during the incident, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).
The shooting occurred along East 6th Street, prompting a swift response from APD officers after an employee at the bar identified the armed individual. As officers approached the man, he brandished his weapon, taking aim at both the officers and innocent bystanders, as reported by APD. In response to the imminent threat, three officers fired multiple shots, ultimately ending the gunman's life at the scene.
While the identity of the deceased individual has not yet been disclosed, APD revealed that three other individuals sustained injuries during the shooting. Details regarding the nature of their injuries remain undisclosed, but one person is currently listed in critical condition, while the remaining two have non-life-threatening injuries.
The three officers involved are now on administrative duty, as per standard protocol, while the incident is under investigation. APD Interim Chief Robin Henderson disclosed that each officer possesses a minimum of nine years of experience within the department, further emphasizing their training and qualifications.
Body camera footage of the shooting will be released within 10 business days, as the investigation continues. The APD's Special Investigations Unit, in collaboration with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, will launch a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, APD's Internal Affairs Unit, alongside the Office of Police Oversight, will oversee an administrative investigation to ensure proper protocol was followed.
