Portland, Ore. - Heavy rains from an ongoing atmospheric river have caused major flooding in the Pacific Northwest, leading to the closure of Highway 101 between Seaside and Cannon Beach Junction. The Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District reported that floodwaters reached a depth of 10 inches at 4:30 a.m., with high tide occurring at 6:47 a.m. As a result, all lanes of the highway are affected from Captain Kid Amusement Park to Cannon Beach Junction.

Authorities have issued a flood advisory until Thursday at 1 a.m. for Northwest Oregon, including the Oregon Coast, Willamette Valley, and Cascade Foothills, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS advises residents to exercise caution, especially during nighttime when it may be more difficult to recognize the dangers of flooding.

The Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District has also urged drivers to use extreme caution during this time. They emphasize that vehicles are not designed to be used as boats and to refrain from attempting to drive through flooded areas. In case of vehicle stalling, motorists are advised to stay inside their vehicles and call 911 for assistance.

The closure of Highway 101 has caused significant disruptions to transportation in the affected area. Local authorities are working diligently to address the situation and ensure the safety of residents and travelers. Meanwhile, those affected by the closure are encouraged to monitor local news and updates for the latest information on road conditions and alternate routes.

Residents and motorists are reminded to stay informed and follow the instructions of local authorities and emergency services. As the flood advisory remains in effect, it is important to prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary risks while navigating through the affected regions.

Further updates on the road closure and flood situation are expected as the weather pattern continues.
