In a tragic incident that unfolded on Monday morning at Macy's in Center City, Philadelphia, a security guard was fatally stabbed by an alleged shoplifter. The guard, identified as Eric Harrison, 27, of Frankford, had been working in the loss prevention department at Macy's for over two years. According to police records, the suspect, Tyrone Garcell Tunnell, has a lengthy history of retail theft and drug-related offenses.
Harrison, along with another guard whose name has not been released, confronted Tunnell when he attempted to steal several hats from the store. After a scuffle, Tunnell dropped the merchandise and left the store. However, he returned a few minutes later, visibly angered, and confronted the unarmed guards again. During the confrontation, Tunnell allegedly produced a pocket knife and began stabbing both guards.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11 a.m., prompted a swift response from the police. Officers arrived at the scene to find Harrison with a laceration to his neck area and the other guard with multiple stab wounds. Both guards were rushed to Thomas Jefferson Hospital, where Harrison was pronounced dead. The second guard, aged 23, is listed in stable condition.
Tunnell, 30, fled the scene but was apprehended by SEPTA transit police at the Somerset station in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. He was quickly identified as the suspect through video evidence and witness statements. On Tuesday afternoon, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner charged Tunnell with murder, attempted murder, and other related offenses.
Tunnell's arrest history reveals a pattern of criminal behavior, including multiple arrests for retail theft and drug offenses since 2010. He had most recently left prison in December 2022 and was on probation at the time of the incident.
The tragic incident has highlighted the ongoing concerns surrounding retail theft and its impact on the safety of both retail workers and customers. Reports of shoplifting have increased nationwide, with Philadelphia experiencing a 28% rise in such incidents compared to last year. However, arrests and charges for retail theft cases have fallen by approximately 75% since Krasner took office in 2017.
As investigations continue, Krasner stated the need to explore strategies to toughen criminal penalties for serial shoplifters. Meanwhile, Macy's announced that the store would remain closed until further notice, prioritizing the safety and well-being of its customers and colleagues.
Eric Harrison's untimely death has left his family, friends, and coworkers devastated. Described as a beloved member of the Macy's community, Harrison was known for his dedication and friendly demeanor towards customers. His mother, Dawn Harrison, expressed shock and deep sorrow over the loss of her son, remembering him as a loving individual with a passion for fashion and a sense of style.
The tragic loss of Eric Harrison serves as a somber reminder of the dangers that retail workers face and the need for enhanced security measures to protect them. Authorities continue to work towards improving safety in retail spaces and ensuring that everyone can enjoy a safe shopping experience in Center City Philadelphia and beyond.
