In a surprising announcement on Tuesday, Kevin Merida, the executive editor of the Los Angeles Times, revealed that he would be leaving the renowned newspaper after leading its newsroom for the past three years. According to a memo seen by The Hollywood Reporter, Merida expressed his decision to depart, citing thoughtful reflection on his career and his desire to contribute meaningfully to the journalism profession he holds dear.

The news of Merida's departure caught many in the Times newsroom off-guard, according to sources. Merida, who joined the publication in 2021 from ESPN, was regarded as a newsroom veteran with a wealth of experience. His appointment was welcomed by owner Patrick Soon-Shiong, who at the time commended Merida's deep understanding of independent journalism and his expertise in translating it across multiple platforms.

Prior to his tenure at the Los Angeles Times, Merida had a notable stint leading ESPN's The Undefeated since 2015. Before that, he enjoyed a successful career at The Washington Post, where he served as the managing editor.

In an email, Soon-Shiong assured staff members that the organization would commence an extensive internal and external search for Merida's successor. In the meantime, the newsroom's senior leadership team, comprising Julia Turner, Sara Yasin, Scott Kraft, and Shani Hilton, will assume oversight of the newsroom. Terry Tang will continue to provide leadership in the Opinion section.

Expressing gratitude for his time at the Los Angeles Times, Merida reflected on the achievements made during his tenure and expressed hope for the continued progress of the publication under new leadership. He praised the Times' dedicated and talented newsroom, lauding it as resilient and superbly skilled.

Merida's last day at the Los Angeles Times will be on Friday. Details about the future leadership of the newsroom are expected to be announced in due course. In his parting message, Merida expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to work with the team, describing it as a defining experience in his career.

The departure of Kevin Merida marks a significant shift atop the Los Angeles Times newsroom, sparking a transition in leadership as the publication remains focused on its mission to modernize and innovate within the evolving realm of news media.
