In a recent interview on CNN's "State of the Union," former Republican Representative Liz Cheney attributed the current "dangerous" chaos within the House GOP to the behavior of former President Donald Trump and the Republicans who continue to support him. Cheney expressed her lack of surprise regarding the turmoil, stating that it was a direct result of the leadership decisions made by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy following the 2020 election and the events of January 6.

Cheney criticized McCarthy for choosing to turn a blind eye to the assault on democracy led by Trump and his allies within the House. She also highlighted her concerns about the resurgence of political violence and threats, which have become alarmingly normalized in today's political landscape.

The House GOP's speakership battle has further aggravated tensions within the conference, following McCarthy's ousting over two weeks ago. Most recently, Representative Jim Jordan withdrew from the race, intensifying the competition among multiple candidates vying for the speakership position.

With frustrations mounting and divisions deepening, it remains unclear whether any candidate will be able to secure the necessary 217 votes needed to win the gavel on the House floor. The narrow majority held by the GOP has complicated the resolution of this impasse.

Cheney, known for being one of Trump's staunchest critics in Congress, emphasized the need for serious individuals who can recognize and comprehend the global dangers we face, including the threats posed by Trump and his supporters. She condemned the acceptance of violence in politics and underscored the inappropriate and perilous nature of such behavior.

According to Cheney, Trump represents the single most dangerous threat to the nation. She firmly stated that he must not be allowed to become the next president. Cheney warned that if he were to assume the presidency again, he would have free rein to enact his previously thwarted actions, with no guardrails in place to rein in his behavior.

Cheney's comments align with her ongoing struggle to hold Trump accountable for his actions and to advocate for a more responsible and cohesive Republican Party. As the battle for the House speakership rages on and divisions within the GOP continue to mount, the future of the party remains uncertain.
