Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney has spoken out, attributing the current chaos within the House of Representatives to the alliance between Kevin McCarthy and former President Donald Trump. Cheney made these remarks during an appearance on "Face the Nation" Sunday, stating that the disorder gripping the House is a direct consequence of McCarthy's decision to embrace Trump and align with the extreme factions within the Republican Party.
Cheney expressed her lack of surprise at the current state of affairs but described it as a disgrace and an embarrassment. She highlighted McCarthy's embrace of the most radical elements of the party as a contributing factor to the current impasse and stalling of business in Congress.
The House of Representatives has been without a speaker since October 3, after McCarthy was removed from the position in a historic vote, marking the first time a speaker has been ousted in such a manner. Following McCarthy's removal, Majority Leader Steve Scalise was initially nominated as his successor. However, Scalise withdrew his name shortly after.
Last week, House Republicans nominated Representative Jim Jordan to be the next speaker. Jordan, a close ally of Trump who has consistently cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election, failed to secure the required 217 votes on the House floor, resulting in his removal as the nominee. Currently, nine Republicans have thrown their names into the ring to become the next speaker.
Cheney, who represented Wyoming's at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023 and was a vocal critic of Trump following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, held a high-ranking leadership position among House Republicans as the chair of the House Republican Conference from 2019 to 2021. However, she was removed from this role in a vote led by McCarthy and subsequently lost a primary to a Trump-backed Republican.
Despite these setbacks, Cheney has indicated her continued involvement in politics, fueling rumors of a potential bid for the Republican presidential nomination. During her appearance on "Face the Nation," she emphasized her commitment to supporting serious candidates at all levels.
Regarding the disarray surrounding the election of a new House speaker, Cheney acknowledged the presence of serious individuals within the Republican Party who could assume the role. She stressed the importance of selecting a candidate who would not attempt to dispute election results and who would prioritize continued aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
The ongoing debate over bundling aid to Ukraine with aid to Israel, as requested by President Joe Biden, has divided Republican lawmakers in the House. The decision to nominate a replacement for McCarthy as speaker has also proved contentious, stemming from a far-right revolt within the party. This revolt was a response to McCarthy's reliance on Democrats to pass a funding bill and avoid a government shutdown.
Cheney also addressed the domestic threats against federal lawmakers in recent weeks, attributing them to Trump and some of his supporters who have encouraged and participated in political violence. She called attention to the death threats received by Republican lawmakers who were opposed to Jordan's nomination, emphasizing that the acceptance of such violence has no place in the party or the country.
As the House of Representatives continues to grapple with its leadership vacuum, the divisions within the Republican Party are on full display. The repercussions of McCarthy's alliance with Trump and the rise of extreme elements within the party linger, leaving uncertainty in the upcoming race for the position of House speaker.
