In a letter obtained by The Independent, the lawyer representing Hollywood attorney Kevin Morris, who lent money to Hunter Biden to cover a substantial debt to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has accused House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer's staff of intentionally misrepresenting Morris' testimony during a recent deposition. Bryan Sullivan, Morris' lawyer, criticized Comer for allegedly reneging on assurances that the entirety of Morris' testimony would be released and accused the Kentucky Republican of selectively leaking "cherry-picked, out of context and totally misleading descriptions" of his client's statements.
Sullivan, in his letter addressed to Comer, expressed his disappointment with the committee's failure to release the complete transcript of Morris' testimony as he had requested. According to Sullivan, the staff had initially promised fair treatment for Morris, but shortly after the closed-door deposition concluded, Comer issued a statement that distorted the lawyer's comments. Sullivan cited nine instances in which Comer deliberately misstated what had occurred during the deposition, challenging the accuracy of the Oversight panel chair's description.
One of the major points of contention arose from Comer's claim that Morris had loaned money to Hunter Biden in an attempt to "insulate then-presidential candidate Joe Biden from political liability." Sullivan emphatically asserted that Morris was solely motivated by a desire to avoid being dragged into political controversies like former President Trump's impeachment. Morris testified that he had not considered President Biden's campaign and was solely focused on helping his client, Hunter Biden.
Sullivan also disputed Comer's implication that the loans were not legitimate, pointing out that Morris consistently testified that he had indeed loaned the money to Hunter Biden. He highlighted that the loans were reviewed by lawyers and had proper terms, including interest and a repayment timeline. Additionally, Sullivan noted that Comer falsely claimed that the loans would not be due until after this year's election, further mischaracterizing Morris' testimony.
Furthermore, Sullivan challenged Comer's assertion that Morris had meaningful access to President Biden, clarifying that any interactions were merely "cursory" greetings exchanged at events where Morris attended as a guest of Hunter Biden. Sullivan cited the November 2022 wedding of Naomi Biden at the White House as an example of such an event.
Concluding the letter, Sullivan called on Comer to release the full transcript of the deposition, arguing that a "dueling rendition" of the testimony was unnecessary. He urged Comer to embrace transparency by allowing the public to see the truth.
In response to the letter, an Oversight Committee spokesperson stated that the panel intends to release the transcript once it is completed by the stenographer. They maintained that the transcript will affirm Chairman Comer's account of the interview with Kevin Morris.
As the controversy surrounding Hunter Biden's finances continues to unfold, the accusations made by Morris' lawyer only add fuel to the ongoing political fire. The release of the full transcript will undoubtedly shed light on the true nature of Morris' testimony and potentially impact the public's perception of the matter at hand.
