In a shocking turn of events, an Oklahoma judge has agreed to resign after it was discovered that she sent over 500 texts from the bench during a murder trial. The trial centered around the killing of a 2-year-old boy, and the judge's texts were filled with mocking remarks towards prosecutors and even included emojis.
District Judge Traci Soderstrom's resignation comes as part of a proposed settlement agreement filed with the Oklahoma Court on the Judiciary. Under this agreement, she also vowed to not seek any judicial office again in the state. Soderstrom faced serious accusations, including gross neglect of duty, oppression in office, lack of proper temperament, and failure to supervise her office.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Kane IV, recommended that Soderstrom be removed from her position following an investigation. The investigation revealed that she had openly mocked prosecutors, laughed at a bailiff's inappropriate comment about a prosecutor's genitals, praised the defense attorney, and even called the prosecutor's key witness a liar during the murder trial of Khristian Tyler Martzall.
Security video footage published by The Oklahoman showed Soderstrom continuously texting or messaging for extended periods during critical moments of the trial, such as jury selection, opening statements, and testimony. The trial took place in Chandler, located about 45 miles outside of Oklahoma City.
The texts sent by the judge during Martzall's trial on a charge of killing his girlfriend's 2-year-old son included derogatory remarks about the prosecutor, stating that he was "sweating through his coat." The messages also described the defense attorney as "awesome" and even questioned if she could applaud their performance during opening arguments. Overall, Soderstrom exchanged more than 500 texts with her bailiff.
One particularly concerning text included a laughing emoji icon sent by Soderstrom in response to a bailiff's crass and demeaning reference to the prosecuting attorneys' genitals, as written by Chief Justice Kane.
Finally, Martzall was eventually convicted of second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to time already served.
This incident has raised questions about the integrity of the justice system, as judges are expected to maintain impartiality and professionalism at all times. The resignation of Judge Traci Soderstrom serves as a stark reminder of the importance of judicial ethics and the responsibilities that come with the position.
