In a significant development in Donald Trump's civil fraud trial, New York County Judge Arthur Engoron has issued a gag order on the former president's legal team. The judge cited the lawyers' "repeated, inappropriate remarks" about court staff and the shocking "hundreds" of threats that have been directed at the court since the trial commenced.

Judge Engoron's ruling, delivered on Friday, addressed the Trump legal team's unfounded accusations of bias against his principal law clerk and claims of improper influence on the ongoing bench trial. The judge expressed concern about the escalating threat level and the potential for violence resulting from the highly charged political climate surrounding the trial.

The court has been bombarded with a deluge of harassment in various forms, including threatening phone calls, voicemails, emails, letters, and packages. This alarming wave of threats emphasizes the dangerous consequences of inflammatory rhetoric in the political arena.

Tensions between the judge and Trump's lawyer, Christopher Kise, have heightened in recent court exchanges. Kise repeatedly took issue with the judge's interactions with his clerk, who has been accused of passing notes and whispering during testimony. These objections have further fueled the ongoing animosity between the legal teams.

The principal law clerk in question has been a subject of fixation for Trump and his team. The initial gag order was issued after Trump suggested that the clerk was romantically involved with Senator Chuck Schumer, a claim vehemently denied due to Schumer's marital status. Trump has faced fines totaling $15,000 for violating the gag order twice.

The threats and harassment faced by public officials, including court staff, following Trump's attacks, have been well-documented. Judge Engoron acknowledged that his court staff has also faced a barrage of alarming threats since the trial's commencement.

It is worth noting that Trump is currently subject to another gag order in a federal election interference case. However, a recent temporary stay issued by an appeals court has raised eyebrows and added intrigue to the situation.

During the proceedings on Friday, Kise drew attention to an article from the right-wing website Breitbart. The article alleged that a Twitter account had submitted a complaint regarding the clerk's alleged "partisan political and Democratic activities." Kise clarified that he had not personally confirmed the veracity of these claims but hinted at a potential mistrial motion if they could be substantiated.

As the trial unfolds, the imposition of the gag order on Trump's lawyers reflects the escalating tensions and the need to maintain a fair and safe judicial process. The court remains committed to ensuring fairness and justice in the high-stakes civil fraud trial against the Trump family and their company.
