In a Lower Manhattan courtroom, the ongoing criminal trial of actor Jonathan Majors took an emotional turn as his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, took the stand to testify against him. The Emmy-nominated star of "Creed III" is facing three charges of misdemeanor assault, aggravated harassment, and harassment, following accusations that he assaulted Jabbari earlier this year.
The trial, which began on Tuesday, saw Jabbari providing a detailed account of their two-year relationship, often breaking down in tears. In her testimony, she described the beginnings of their romance as "amazing," with Majors being kind, loving, and even writing poetry for her. However, she also recalled incidents that raised concerns about his anger and controlling behavior.
One such incident occurred in December 2021, when Jabbari mentioned a former boyfriend's pet, leading Majors to berate her. She stated, "It was the first time I felt scared of him," adding, "I knew to never mention my ex again or anyone I had dated before." Jabbari also recounted a heated argument in June 2022 when she attended the Glastonbury Festival with her friends. She claims that Majors became angry when she couldn't respond to his messages due to poor cell service, resulting in her leaving the festival to appease him.
Throughout her testimony, Jabbari expressed feelings of guilt and isolation, saying, "I felt like I had to keep a lot of secrets from everyone. I felt very isolated." She described a cycle in which Majors would apologize and thank her for her patience after episodes of anger and hostility.
The court also heard audio evidence, a recorded fight between Majors and Jabbari in September 2022, in which the actor demanded that she behave like Coretta Scott King or Michelle Obama. Majors can be heard proclaiming, "I'm a great man. A great man. I do great things for my culture and for the world," adding that the woman who supports him needs to be a great woman.
Jabbari confessed to the jury that she promised Majors she would keep the troubling aspects of their relationship a secret, as she felt scared yet dependent on him. She stated, "I felt like I was existing in his world. I had low self-esteem. I lost a lot of weight. I felt incompetent and dependent on him. He was the only one who knew what went on."
The trial continues after a lunch break, with Jabbari expected to provide further testimony. If convicted, Majors could face up to a year in prison. The actor has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
As the trial progresses, the courtroom remains filled with tension and emotions, shedding light on the complexities of an intimate relationship marred by alleged abuse and control. The prosecution will continue presenting its case, while the defense will have the opportunity to present their side in the days to come.
