The domestic violence trial of actor Jonathan Majors, known for his role in "Loki," is set to begin on December 4, following the completion of jury selection in a Manhattan courtroom. Six jurors, consisting of three men and three women, along with two alternates, have been chosen to assess the misdemeanor assault and harassment charges against Majors.
If found guilty, the actor could face up to a year behind bars for the March 25 incident involving his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. The trial is expected to last approximately two weeks.
While the trial was scheduled to start immediately, the proceedings have been delayed. The lawyers, Judge Michael Gaffey, the jurors, and Jonathan Majors will reconvene on December 4 for opening statements. In the meantime, Judge Gaffey, prosecutors, and the defense team will be present in court on Friday to address any applications or other issues.
In a significant development, Judge Gaffey ruled that the jury will be informed that Majors' accuser, Grace Jabbari, was also arrested over the same incident. Additionally, the judge issued a sealed decision regarding evidence in the case, which reportedly contains information about potential past incidents involving the actor in the United States and the UK.
Majors' primary lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, and co-counsel Seth Zuckerman, appeared satisfied with the decisions made by Judge Gaffey. However, media organizations' attempts to unseal what the judge considered "prejudicial and inflammatory" evidence were unsuccessful.
During the trial, the jury will learn about Jabbari's recent arrest, but she will be allowed to testify that she had no knowledge of the arrest warrant and promptly surrendered when she became aware of it. Prosecutors will have the opportunity to cross-examine the NYPD detective who recommended Jabbari's arrest, ensuring a fair and thorough examination of the case.
Jonathan Majors, accompanied by his girlfriend, Meagan Good, attended the courtroom wearing a wide-brimmed fedora hat, a black buttoned coat, and a dark double-breasted suit. As the trial progresses, it remains uncertain whether Majors will take the stand to testify in his own defense.
The trial, which has faced several delays and pre-trial wranglings, commenced with jury selection, and the courtroom has now been reopened to the press and public. Six jurors and one alternate will ultimately be chosen to hear the case.
This high-profile trial has attracted significant attention, leading to the termination of various endorsements and job opportunities for Majors. However, the outcome of the trial will determine the actor's future as he awaits the verdict on the assault and harassment charges.
Despite the trial not commencing immediately, the selection of a jury marks a crucial step towards resolving this criminal case against Jonathan Majors.
