At least seven people, including several Egyptian border guards, have been injured as shell fragments from an Israeli tank hit the Egyptian border, according to the militaries of both countries. The incident took place late Sunday near the border with the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military confirmed that the incident was an accident. In a statement, they expressed sorrow and stated that an investigation is underway. No further details were provided by the Israeli military regarding the incident.
A spokesperson for the Egyptian military also confirmed the incident but did not disclose the number of injured personnel. Witnesses reported hearing a blast followed by the sound of ambulances being deployed from the Egyptian side.
The injured individuals have been taken to the hospital, according to a witness and a medical source. Meanwhile, Egyptian media reports suggest that the Israeli strike will not disrupt the passage of aid to Gaza.
This accidental blast occurred just hours after a second convoy of aid trucks entered the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing to head towards Gaza. The first convoy, consisting of 20 trucks, had entered Gaza a day earlier. However, aid officials are warning that supplies of food, water, and fuel in Gaza are still running low.
Israel had previously prevented aid from entering the crossing as it continued to bomb the Gaza Strip for over two weeks in response to an incursion by Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7. UN officials have been highlighting the urgent need for aid, stating that at least 100 trucks per day are required to respond to the crisis.
Prior to the recent events, several hundred trucks had been arriving in Gaza daily with humanitarian assistance. Although public and establishment anger against Israel's bombardment of Gaza is mounting, Egypt is limited in coordinating humanitarian aid with Israel due to their current relationship.
As both countries investigate the incident, the focus will now shift towards ensuring the uninterrupted flow of aid to the besieged enclave and addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
