In a recent interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed claims that Israel is violating international law in its ongoing conflict with militant group Hamas. Netanyahu referred to such arguments as "hogwash" and emphasized that Israel is not deliberately targeting civilians.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has criticized Israel for its alleged "collective punishment" of Palestinians, asserting that it amounts to a war crime. However, Netanyahu vehemently denied this accusation, stating, "We are deliberately doing everything in our power to target the terrorists, and the civilians, as is the case in every legitimate war, sometimes become unintended casualties."

Netanyahu further explained that Israel's actions are in response to Hamas's surprise assault on October 7th, which left over 1,200 people dead, including hundreds of civilians. Israel's attacks on Gaza, which have included airstrikes, bombings, and ground assaults, are a direct response to Hamas's aggression.

Humanitarian agencies and world leaders have criticized Israel, arguing that its bombardment of Gaza is leading to the suffering of innocent civilians. However, Netanyahu asserted that Hamas is intentionally using civilians as shields, claiming, "They're doing everything in their power to have their civilians hurt. Because they want this ridiculous and wanton attack on Israel."

Despite Israel's repeated warnings to civilians in northern Gaza to move south in the wake of ground attacks, Hamas leaders have encouraged them to remain in their homes. Netanyahu argued that Hamas will always hide behind civilians, making it difficult for Israel to fight against them effectively.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in a significant number of casualties. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, over 11,070 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the war broke out last month.

Netanyahu concluded by emphasizing the importance of supporting the force that is fighting against terrorists who hide behind civilians. He warned against blaming the victim and called for moral clarity in defending Israel's right to self-defense.

As the conflict continues, the international community remains deeply divided over the issue, with Israel defending its actions in the face of mounting criticism.
