Israeli forces have entered urban refugee camps in central Gaza as part of their ongoing ground offensive, following heavy bombardment and evacuation orders in crowded Palestinian communities. This expansion into the refugee camps raises concerns of further destruction in a war that Israel expects to last for "many months" as it seeks to crush the ruling Hamas militant group. The offensive has already resulted in devastating casualties, with over 20,900 Palestinians killed, including two-thirds women and children, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza. In the past 24 hours alone, 240 people have lost their lives.
The United States, amid mounting calls for Israel to curb civilian casualties and pressure for a cease-fire, has engaged in talks with Israeli officials. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, expressed his determination to deepen the military action, vowing to reach the Hamas terrorists and emphasizing that they will be held accountable.
The ongoing offensive has disrupted essential services, with Gaza's main telecom provider announcing a "complete interruption" of services in the blockaded territory. This telecom outage, along with the repeated interruptions experienced throughout the conflict, is likely to leave most residents without internet connectivity.
The United Nations (U.N.) human rights office has reported over 100 Palestinian deaths due to continued bombardment in central Gaza, with concerns raised about the displacement of residents who were ordered to move there by Israeli authorities. Notably, Israel has signaled that it will no longer grant automatic visas to U.N. employees, accusing the international body of being "complicit partners" in Hamas' tactics. This move could further hinder aid efforts in Gaza.
Residents in central Gaza, particularly in the Nuseirat, Maghazi, and Bureij camps, described intense shelling and airstrikes. These camps, originally housing Palestinians displaced during the 1948 war, are now overflowing with people who have fled from other areas in Gaza seeking refuge.
Meanwhile, Hamas official Osama Hamdan stated that several countries, including Egypt, have sent proposals for resolving the conflict. Hamas claims to be open to all initiatives that can achieve a comprehensive cease-fire and end the aggression against the Palestinian people.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant highlighted that Israel is facing a "multi-arena war" on seven fronts, including Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Iran. Iranian-backed militia groups across the region have shown support for Hamas, intensifying the challenges faced by Israel.
The conflict has also spilled over into neighboring countries, with Hezbollah and Israel engaged in regular missile exchanges along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen against commercial ships in the Red Sea have prompted a multinational naval operation led by the United States to protect shipping routes. Furthermore, the recent drone strike by Iranian-backed militias on a U.S. base in northern Iraq has resulted in retaliatory strikes by U.S. warplanes on locations linked to Kataib Hezbollah.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, as the majority of its population has been displaced from their homes. Deir al-Balah and Rafah, overwhelmed with displaced people, continue to face bombardment despite being declared safe zones. The U.N. has highlighted that a quarter of Gaza's population is suffering from severe food scarcity due to the ongoing Israeli siege, which restricts the entry of essential supplies.
Israel maintains that Hamas is responsible for the civilian death toll in Gaza, citing the use of crowded residential areas and tunnels by militants. However, these claims have yet to be substantiated with evidence. Concerns have also been raised about the treatment of bodies held by Israeli forces, as a truck carrying around 80 unidentified bodies was unloaded at the Kerem Shalom border crossing and buried in a mass grave.
In the north, Israeli troops are concentrating their efforts on the Gaza City neighborhood of Daraj Tufah, believed to be one of Hamas' few remaining strongholds in the area. Despite the Israeli military's announcement of two more soldier deaths during the ground offensive, Hamas has demonstrated resilience throughout the conflict.
The situation in Gaza remains highly volatile, with the intensification of the ground offensive and ongoing clashes between Israel and militant groups. The international community continues to call for an immediate cease-fire and an end to the violence, as the civilian population bears the brunt of the devastating consequences.
