In the midst of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, Israel is also directing attention towards a long-term change on its northern front, specifically concerning the powerful Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. Amidst escalating clashes and attacks between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officials have expressed the need to prevent Israeli civilians from being under constant threat.

The IDF official stated, "We will not return to the situation that was on the 6th of October in the north. It means we will not allow our civilians neither in the Gaza envelope nor on the Lebanese border to be under this threat." Despite highlighting the primary focus on defeating Hamas in Gaza, the official emphasized Israel's readiness to respond to a broader conflict in the north or anywhere in the region, if necessary.

Hezbollah, with support from Iran, has become one of the most powerful non-state actors in the region. The group has significantly expanded its arsenal over the years, currently estimated to possess 200,000 rockets, as well as mortars, unmanned aerial vehicles, surface-to-air missiles, and precision-guided munitions capable of reaching all of Israel. Hezbollah's growing capabilities have raised concerns among Israeli officials.

Recently, clashes along the Israel-Lebanon border, patrolled by UN Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) troops, have intensified. Both sides have engaged in frequent exchanges of fire, with the potential for escalation and miscalculation. UNIFIL spokesperon, Andrea Tenenti, expressed deep concern about the escalating violence and urged all parties to stop their fire and work towards a political solution.

The implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which calls for peace and stability in the region, was also stressed by both the IDF official and UNIFIL. The IDF official stated, "We need to see that area that could be the launching pad for conquering the Galil look very, very different when we return our civilians there." Evacuations have already taken place, with approximately 200,000 people moved from communities near Gaza and Lebanon.

The IDF official also addressed the Iranian nuclear program, highlighting the support Iran provides to groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The official raised concerns about Iran's intentions, given its regime's calls for the annihilation of Israel. Israel, which is widely believed to possess a nuclear arsenal, expressed the need to take such threats seriously.

As the conflict continues, Israel hopes for support from the international community in addressing the situation in the north, including Lebanon's role and the presence of UNIFIL. The IDF official posed the question to many countries, asking whether they can ignore the ongoing events in the north or if action is necessary.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with its potential spillover effects, remains a volatile and significant concern. The focus on achieving long-term change on the northern front underscores Israel's determination to protect its citizens and prevent future escalations.
