In a recent announcement, the Israeli government has agreed to implement four-hour humanitarian pauses and establish two corridors in the conflict-stricken Gaza Strip. The decision comes as a result of ongoing engagements and discussions between Israeli officials and key figures from the United States.

The establishment of these humanitarian pauses aims to facilitate the safe movement of civilians, allowing them to depart areas affected by hostilities. Additionally, the pauses will increase the flow of aid and create conditions for the release of hostages, a key concern for the international community.

During the past few days, the first humanitarian corridor, open for four to five hours daily, has already enabled thousands of people to reach safer areas in the north of Gaza. The second corridor, along the coastal road, is expected to allow thousands more to access safer regions in the south. Efforts are being made to ensure that Hamas does not hinder or discourage civilians from taking advantage of these corridors.

Simultaneously, a significant influx of humanitarian aid has been observed in Gaza. Yesterday alone, 106 trucks carrying aid passed through the Rafah Crossing, with the crossing remaining open for further aid inflow and the safe departure of foreign nationals. These efforts reflect the commitment to addressing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and ensuring that assistance reaches those in need.

While the focus is on the movement of civilians, questions have been raised about the right of those who leave northern Gaza to return to their original homes. The United States, in addressing this concern, emphasizes that forced relocation is not supported and that Palestinians should have the ability to return if they have departed for any reason during the conflict. The issue of territorial integrity in Gaza has also been raised, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stating that any division of Gaza into two sections is unacceptable.

In response to queries regarding the legal aspects of the conflict, the United States has reiterated the need for adherence to international humanitarian law. Although the specific application of the Fourth Geneva Convention to Gaza and the West Bank was not addressed, the U.S. government stands firm on its commitment to minimizing civilian casualties and ensuring the conflict is conducted in accordance with international law.

With the introduction of these humanitarian pauses and corridors, efforts are being made to provide much-needed aid and allow for safe civilian movement. The United States continues to engage with its Israeli partners to explore additional avenues for humanitarian assistance and to work towards a lasting peace and security in the region.
