In a recent development, the Iraqi government announced that several individuals allegedly involved in the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad last week have ties to the country's security services. The spokesperson for the Iraqi Prime Minister did not provide specific details regarding which security services the alleged perpetrators are connected to.
The attack took place a week ago when rocket salvos struck the heavily fortified US compound located in Baghdad's Green Zone, resulting in minor damages. Following the incident, Iraq's security forces swiftly took action and have now apprehended a number of individuals believed to be responsible for the December 7 attack. Investigations are ongoing to track down all those involved.
According to reports from the AFP news agency, 13 people, including members of security forces, have already been arrested in connection with the attack. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the assault on the US embassy. Separately, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed militias, has claimed responsibility for attacks on a US airbase in Iraq and another base in eastern Syria that occurred on the same day as the embassy attack.
These recent attacks on US facilities mark just one of many incidents that have targeted American installations in Syria and Iraq since the start of the Gaza war on October 7. The US military has reported a total of 84 strikes on its facilities during this period, resulting in approximately 60 injured service personnel. The US government has accused Iran-backed militias of carrying out these attacks and has urged the Iraqi government to take action in curbing their activities.
Iraq's Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who came to power through a pro-Tehran coalition, condemned the embassy attacks as "unacceptable and unjustifiable". He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and security in Iraq.
The United States currently has approximately 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq and an additional 900 in eastern Syria, primarily engaged in missions against ISIL (ISIS).
