In a tragic update to the Perry High School shooting, Principal Dan Marburger has succumbed to his injuries, according to his wife. The shooting took place on January 4, when a 17-year-old student opened fire, leaving one sixth-grade student dead and injuring seven others, including Principal Marburger.

Marburger had been hailed a hero for his brave actions during the attack. Witnesses reported that he attempted to save students by engaging the shooter, talking to him, and distracting him. Marburger's daughter, Claire, took to social media to highlight her father's selfless actions, stating that he would have willingly put himself in harm's way for the benefit of his students and staff.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety commended Marburger for his courageous and selfless acts, acknowledging that he had placed himself in danger to protect his students. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed her deep condolences to Marburger's family and ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff on Sunday in his honor.

Marburger had devoted at least 25 years of his career to serving the Perry Community School District, where he was highly respected by colleagues and students alike.

The Perry High School shooting marked the second incident of its kind in the United States within the first few days of 2024. On that fateful day, officers responded swiftly to the shooting, discovering multiple individuals with gunshot wounds. The gunman was later found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Alongside Principal Marburger, the Perry Middle School student who lost their life in the attack was identified as 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff. Authorities have revealed that Jolliff suffered three gunshot wounds during the tragic event.

As the community mourns the loss of Principal Marburger, his heroic and selfless actions will forever be remembered. May he rest in peace.
