In an ongoing investigation, authorities in Silt, Colorado confirmed that they are looking into an apparent altercation that took place between U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and her ex-husband, Jayson Boebert, at a restaurant on Saturday. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but Boebert's campaign released a statement on Sunday denying claims of physical violence.
According to the statement released by Boebert's campaign, she denied punching her ex-husband in the face and stated that no arrests were made. The congresswoman plans to consult with her lawyer to address the false accusations made against her and explore her legal options.
While the police chief, Mike Kite, confirmed the existence of the investigation, he refrained from providing further details, including the identity of the person who contacted the authorities. Officers are intending to interview witnesses and collect any surveillance footage from the Miner's Claim restaurant where the altercation occurred. However, the restaurant was closed on Sunday, and attempts to reach them by phone were unsuccessful.
When reached for comment by The Associated Press, Jayson Boebert did not respond to a Facebook message. However, in an interview with The Denver Post, he mentioned that he contacted the police on Sunday morning but expressed his reluctance to press charges. Jayson Boebert stated that he and his ex-wife were engaged in a difficult conversation and hoped for a peaceful resolution.
Chief Kite did not disclose whether Jayson Boebert was indeed the one who initiated the call to the police. The situation is being regarded as a saddening occurrence by Rep. Lauren Boebert, as stated in her released statement, adding that it is another reason she plans to move.
Lauren Boebert, a Republican who has served two terms representing the western side of Colorado in the U.S. House, recently announced her decision to switch congressional districts this year. She aims to run for a seat representing the eastern side of the state, which has become available with the retirement of Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck. In her current district, Boebert faced a formidable Democratic opponent who nearly defeated her in the 2022 general election and outpaced her in fundraising.
During her time in Washington, Boebert has garnered national attention and aligned herself with the extreme right-wing faction of the GOP. Known for her assertive style, she made headlines last year when she heckled President Joe Biden during his 2022 State of the Union address.
The investigation into the alleged altercation between Rep. Lauren Boebert and her ex-husband Jayson Boebert is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as law enforcement continues their inquiry.
