In a shocking revelation, an independent inquiry has concluded that a necrophiliac murderer, known as the "morgue monster," was able to abuse the bodies of more than 100 women and girls for 15 years in the UK, largely due to "serious failings" at the hospitals where he was employed. The disturbing incidents, which took place between 2005 and 2020, went undetected until police discovered evidence of his offenses in hospital morgues.

David Fuller, 69, worked as a maintenance worker in health facilities in southern England, and he seized the opportunity to commit his heinous acts when he knew that other staff would not be present. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 100, and Fuller had already been under suspicion for two sexually motivated killings before the extent of his necrophilic crimes came to light.

In a breakthrough moment, advances in DNA testing technology led to Fuller's arrest in 2020 for the separate 1987 murders of Wendy Knell, 25, and Caroline Pierce, 20. During a search of his home, police came across disturbing footage that Fuller had recorded, depicting his horrifying acts with the corpses. As a result, in 2021, he was sentenced to two whole-life terms for the killings, as well as a concurrent 12-year sentence for his additional offenses.

The British government had initiated an independent inquiry to investigate how Fuller was able to evade detection for such an extensive period. The inquiry, as reported by The Guardian, identified failings in "management" and "governance," with allegations that senior officials at the NHS trust where Fuller worked were aware of issues in the mortuary's operation as early as 2008. Shockingly, little attention was given to monitoring access to the site, allowing Fuller to enter the morgue 444 times in a single year without raising any suspicions.

Sir Jonathan Michael, the chair of the inquiry, highlighted the "persistent lack of curiosity" that contributed to the environment in which Fuller could carry out his disgusting acts for 15 years without being suspected or caught. The BBC reports that Michael emphasized the shock and horror that Fuller's actions had caused not only within the UK but also internationally.

The findings of the inquiry have sparked outrage and called for urgent reforms in hospital protocols to prevent similar horrific incidents in the future. The failure to follow standard procedures and the disregard shown towards monitoring access to sensitive areas has exposed fundamental flaws in the system that allowed a monster like Fuller to inflict unimaginable pain on innocent victims and their grieving families for far too long.
