In response to a surge in new arrivals from Texas, the state of Illinois has announced that it will temporarily provide hotel rooms to house up to 200 asylum-seekers in Chicago. The decision came after the City of Chicago requested additional resources to accommodate the recent influx. Illinois has seen a significant number of asylum-seekers arriving since last year, with a majority of them coming from Venezuela.
The state revealed that it did not receive advanced notice or coordinate with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who reportedly sent an "unprecedented number" of asylum-seekers in recent days, according to a news release on Sunday. Despite the lack of coordination, the Illinois Department of Human Services expressed its commitment to welcoming the new arrivals and providing them with support services and assistance with work-permit applications, with the aim of expediting their journey to self-sufficiency.
As of Sunday morning, Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications reported that there were 14,554 migrants spread across 27 shelters in the city. To address the urgent need for housing, both the city and the state have been offering intermediate housing solutions to migrants through shelters and hotels for several months. Subsequently, migrants can apply for city- and state-funded rental assistance to secure more permanent housing.
Previously, many migrants were forced to sleep on the floors of the city's police stations. However, as winter approached, the city faced increasing pressure to clear the stations and transfer new arrivals to city shelters. Now, with the availability of hotel rooms, migrants who receive housing there will eventually be relocated to a former CVS in Little Village once the construction of that shelter is completed in January. Furthermore, the state is actively exploring additional sites for future shelters.
The funding for hotel accommodations for migrants comes from the $160 million earmarked by the state in November to address the influx of asylum-seekers. This investment supplements the $478 million in state funding already provided for the humanitarian crisis during fiscal years 2023 and 2024, which includes resources for shelter, food, medical care, rental assistance, and support services.
Illinois' temporary provision of hotel rooms for asylum-seekers underscores the state's commitment to supporting and accommodating those in need. While the increased influx poses challenges, the collaborative efforts between the state and the city aim to ensure that migrants can find stability and ultimately achieve self-sufficiency.
