An ice storm warning has been issued for portions of northwestern Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma, with the peak of the ice storm expected on Monday morning, according to the FOX Forecast Center. This warning is in effect through Monday, January 22, 2024.
Communities such as Fort Smith and Fayetteville are at a significant risk of experiencing disruptive ice, making driving and travel conditions dangerous and potentially impossible. The FOX Forecast Center has advised caution, as any elevated surfaces that are not treated will quickly ice over.
The total ice accretion from the storm could reach up to a half-inch, posing a threat of power outages and tree damage. Even lower amounts, around a tenth-inch of ice, can still cause numerous problems. It is crucial for residents to stay updated with the latest information and take necessary precautions.
Fortunately, the FOX Forecast Center has predicted that warmer air will move north quickly, leading to milder conditions and a change from freezing rain to plain rain showers. This shift should help alleviate some of the ice and limit any lingering impacts. However, the forecast indicates that the ice threat will move farther north as the warm air continues to advance.
Late Monday into Tuesday, ice and snow are expected to develop across portions of the Midwest and Great Lakes region. The exact duration and severity of the ice remain uncertain, but it is expected to mainly affect road conditions and cause ice accumulation on elevated surfaces. Sporadic power outages cannot be ruled out.
Furthermore, colder air in the region will bring snow to areas like Wisconsin, Michigan, and the eastern Great Lakes. Although some quick bursts of heavy snow are possible on Tuesday morning, the overall impact is expected to be low before conditions improve by Tuesday evening.
Residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts, follow recommended safety measures, and avoid unnecessary travel during the ice storm. It is essential to take precautions and stay safe as this hazardous weather situation unfolds.
