In a recent development, Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Patrick Byrne, the former CEO of online retailer Overstock. The lawsuit, filed in the Central District of California on Wednesday, accuses Byrne of making false statements alleging that Hunter Biden sought a bribe from Iran.
According to the lawsuit, Byrne published false statements in June, claiming that Hunter Biden had reached out to the Iranian government in the fall of 2021. The allegations suggested that Hunter Biden offered to "unfreeze" $8 billion in Iranian funds in exchange for $800 million being funneled into an account. The suit further claimed that Byrne reposted these statements on X (formerly known as Twitter) on October 8.
Hunter Biden's lawyers argued that Byrne's posts implied that the actions of President Biden's son had contributed to the terrorist attacks by Hamas, which occurred around the same time as Byrne's reposting of the false statements. The lawsuit contends that Hunter Biden was depicted as a "substantial factor" in the recent violence and war in the Middle East.
In response to the lawsuit, Patrick Byrne took to social media platform X and wrote, "Hunter's lawsuit against me (my interpretation): 'Now that I've got Daddy's DOJ under control... Let's silence Byrne with a lawsuit + gag order.' Good luck with that." Byrne also claimed that his first witness, a federal agent with 35 years of experience, would testify to the truth of his statements.
This is not the first legal battle involving Hunter Biden and defamation claims. Byrne was previously sued by Dominion voting systems in 2021 for making false claims about the 2020 election. The controversy surrounding Hunter Biden's laptop hard drive, which allegedly contained sensitive information and emails, has led to multiple lawsuits as well.
In regards to the current lawsuit, it is worth noting that it was filed on the same day that Hunter and his uncle James Biden were subpoenaed by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee as part of the House GOP's impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The investigation has been focused on Hunter Biden's involvement with a Ukrainian energy company while his father was vice president.
The lawsuit against Patrick Byrne is the latest in a series of legal actions taken by Hunter Biden. It underscores the ongoing controversies surrounding the laptop hard drive and allegations of foreign business dealings. As the legal battle unfolds, it remains to be seen how the court will adjudicate these claims and their potential implications for the Biden family.
