In a move that has sparked controversy, Hungary's right-wing government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has launched a "national consultation" survey that seeks citizens' opinions on various issues, including migration, LGBTQ+ rights, and support for Ukraine. The survey, which many perceive as being anti-EU in nature, has raised concerns about the government's stance on these divisive topics.

Consisting of 11 questions, the survey poses inquiries that touch upon Hungary's relationship with the European Union. One notable question asks citizens whether they would support blocking the EU's €50 billion aid package to Ukraine unless Hungary receives frozen funds from the bloc. This issue has been a point of contention between the EU and Orbán's government, with the EU having previously withheld funds due to concerns about Hungary's rule-of-law and human rights standards.

Hungary has taken a firm stance against providing weapons to Ukraine since the onset of Russia's invasion and has also opposed EU sanctions against Moscow. Furthermore, the country has expressed its reservations regarding Ukraine's aspirations to join the EU.

The survey's framing and tone have drawn criticism. It is not the first time that Orbán's government has employed such surveys, which have been accused of being manipulative and serving as propaganda tools. Critics argue that the surveys sway voters towards government-preferred responses, often presenting an antagonistic position against the EU.

One particular question in the latest survey accuses the EU of wanting to create "migrant ghettos" in Hungary, asking if respondents believe Hungary should accept Brussels' migration plans or prevent the establishment of such communities. Another question alleges that the EU aims to spread "aggressive LGBTQ propaganda" targeting children, further heightening tensions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

Although every Hungarian of voting age will receive the survey by mail, the respondents' answers hold no legal significance. Historically, the response rate has been low, with less than 20% of recipients participating. However, an overwhelmingly high percentage of those who do respond align with the government's narrative, supporting its policies and perspectives.

The controversial survey underscores Hungary's ongoing disagreements with the EU and its nationalist approach to governance. It amplifies divisions within the bloc and raises questions about the future of Hungary's relationship with the European Union on contentious issues such as migration, LGBTQ+ rights, and relations with Ukraine.

As the survey unfolds and the government collects responses, it will be interesting to see how these divisive topics continue to shape the political landscape in Hungary and potentially impact the country's standing within the European Union.
