In the wake of New York's Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on sexual misconduct claims, a number of high-profile Hollywood figures find themselves facing lawsuits as the deadline for filing claims draws near. Axl Rose, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jamie Foxx, and Jimmy Iovine are among the prominent defendants who are either expected to be sued or who have already been named in complaints filed in New York's state Supreme Court.
One of the plaintiffs, former model Sheila Kennedy, has accused Axl Rose, the frontman of Guns N' Roses, of raping her in 1989. In her complaint, Kennedy alleges that Rose forcibly penetrated her anus without consent, leading to severe emotional distress and impacting her career in the entertainment industry.
Cuba Gooding Jr., who faced charges in 2019 related to allegations of groping and forcibly kissing three women, is now being sued by two of the accusers. Jasmine Abbay claims the actor forcibly kissed her, while Kelsey Harbert alleges that he groped her breast. The plaintiffs are seeking damages for emotional distress and lost wages.
Jamie Foxx is facing a lawsuit filed by an anonymous woman who claims that he sexually assaulted her in 2015. According to the complaint, Foxx allegedly cornered her at a New York City venue and proceeded to "slide his hands into Plaintiff's pants and put his fingers on and in Plaintiff's vagina and anus." The accuser is also suing the establishment where the incident took place for negligent supervision.
While not yet officially sued, music mogul Jimmy Iovine has received a summons and is expected to be accused of sexual assault stemming from an incident in 2007 when he was the chief executive of Interscope Records. A woman, filing as a Jane Doe plaintiff, alleges that Iovine engaged in multiple instances of sexual abuse and forcible touching, including a specific incident of sexual misconduct in New York City.
The passage of the Adult Survivors Act has provided victims with an opportunity to seek justice despite the passage of time. Douglas Wigdor, a lawyer representing one of the plaintiffs, states that the act has allowed victims to come forward and seek redress for the harm they have suffered.
In response to the lawsuits against Bill Cosby, his spokesperson Andrew Wyatt released a statement calling for the closure of the "Look Back Windows," claiming they are being abused to target successful and wealthy men.
As the deadline for filing claims under the Adult Survivors Act approaches, more high-profile figures may face lawsuits related to allegations of sexual misconduct. The impact of these legal actions on the entertainment industry and the continued effort to address and rectify past instances of abuse remains to be seen.
Representatives for Jimmy Iovine and Cuba Gooding Jr. have not yet commented on the lawsuits.
