Bellingham, WA - An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a devastating overnight fire that engulfed Fairhaven's historic Terminal Building. First responders were dispatched to the scene just before midnight on Saturday, December 16, according to Pulse Point.

The Terminal Building, a 134-year-old structure located on the corner of Harris Avenue and 11th Street, has been an iconic landmark in the city, housing various businesses and offices over the years. Most recently, it was home to Tony's Coffee, Old Independent Coffee Shop, and Harris Avenue Cafe.

The fire, which quickly escalated to a two-alarm blaze, left the brick shell of the building almost completely gutted. The community gathered on Sunday to mourn the loss and lament the destruction of the heart of Fairhaven.

Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood, who had his law office in the building for 25 years before relocating last year, expressed his devastation at the loss. "It's still sinking in," Mayor Fleetwood said. "It was the heart of Fairhaven. It's really, really sad."

Due to the risk of building collapse, a half-block of Harris Avenue and 11th Street has been closed off. Bellingham Fire Chief Bill Hewitt confirmed that fencing has been erected around the premises to protect the public. "Our number one priority is to get the building stabilized so we can conduct a thorough search," Chief Hewitt stated.

Until it is safe for investigators to penetrate deeper into the structure, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Fire and police officials have not yet confirmed if any injuries were sustained. The property owner has contacted their insurance, and a team is being mobilized to address the structural concerns as soon as possible.

The fire chief expects the fencing to remain in place for several weeks, although plans are underway to open roadways by the end of the day. The building's instability was confirmed during a preliminary assessment, according to Brian Westerman, a fire inspector with the Bellingham Fire Department.

Residents and nearby business owners are devastated by the loss of the neighborhood landmark. The building's blackened studs and compromised brick structure indicate that salvation may not be possible. However, the community is hopeful that the historic building will not be replaced by condos or parking lots.

Amidst the heartbreaking scene, neighboring businesses are also dealing with the aftermath of the fire. Acme Valley Ice Cream Cafe had to delay its opening due to the smell of smoke inside, while Dirty Dan Harris Steakhouse announced its closure until further notice. Fortunately, Fairhaven Runners & Walkers, located next door to Dirty Dan's, sustained minimal damage and was able to open on time.

As the investigation continues, residents and visitors alike mourn the loss of a beloved Fairhaven landmark. The Terminal Building represented the history and character of the area, and its absence leaves a significant void in the community.
