In a significant move to highlight the impact of the reversal of Roe v. Wade, President Joe Biden has invited the mother at the center of a high-profile Texas Supreme Court abortion case as a guest to his upcoming State of the Union speech. The White House announced that Kate Cox, who sought to terminate her pregnancy in Texas but was denied by the state's high court, will attend the speech alongside the president and first lady Jill Biden.

Cox's case gained national attention when she was denied the request to terminate her pregnancy after learning that her fetus had a fatal diagnosis related to a rare chromosomal disorder. The denial came amidst the ban on abortions in Texas, which was reinstated in June 2022 after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling.

Due to the ban, Cox was forced to travel out of state to obtain an abortion, as many women in similar situations have had to do since the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Her lawyers argued that continuing the pregnancy posed a significant risk to Cox's own health. President Biden and first lady Jill Biden spoke with Cox, expressing gratitude for her courage in sharing her story and speaking out against the extreme abortion ban in Texas.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized the importance of sharing the devastating stories of women impacted by restrictive abortion laws across the country. She stated that Cox's attendance at the State of the Union will enable Americans to hear firsthand the experiences that many women are facing due to the erosion of reproductive rights.

The State of the Union address, scheduled for March 7, will provide President Biden with a platform to address the issue of reproductive rights and emphasize his administration's support for abortion rights. Since his election campaign, Biden has made clear that protecting and expanding reproductive rights and healthcare access is a central pillar of his platform.

The Biden-Harris administration aims to stand with the majority of Americans who support abortion rights, while Republican elected officials often take a different stance. In various states, voters have expressed opposition to restrictive abortion measures and have supported candidates who advocate for abortion rights.

As the nation eagerly awaits President Biden's State of the Union address, the presence of Kate Cox, a woman directly impacted by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, serves as a powerful symbol of the ongoing battle for women's reproductive rights.
