In a tragic incident, a helicopter carrying a group of skiers crashed in British Columbia, Canada, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving four others critically injured. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that the accident occurred at approximately 4.15pm PT on Monday during a heli-skiing expedition in the rugged backcountry.
The ill-fated helicopter was one of three helicopters transporting the skiers when it went down. Thankfully, the two other helicopters managed to transport four survivors from the crash site to paramedics, who swiftly transferred them to a hospital in Terrace, located 50km away. All of the survivors were reported to be in critical condition.
Responding promptly to the emergency, the province's emergency health services deployed three air ambulances and five ground ambulances to Terrace, ensuring the victims received immediate medical attention. Additionally, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria dispatched a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter to assist at the crash site.
Tragically, this is the second fatal helicopter incident in British Columbia within the past two weeks. Another helicopter crash near the mountain town of Revelstoke claimed the life of its pilot.
Heli-skiing, a popular but expensive winter activity in the province, attracts skiers to the pristine, mountainous backcountry. Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, the company involved in the recent accident, offers package prices ranging from $5,000 to a staggering $92,000 USD. While heli-skiing comes with inherent risks associated with the terrain, such as hidden crevasses, rocks, and avalanches, helicopter accidents are rare occurrences.
Northern Escape Heli-Skiing expressed their deep condolences and assured that they take every precaution to minimize risks while operating in the backcountry. However, they acknowledged that it is impossible to eliminate 100% of the risks, as is the case with many outdoor activities.
The company is collaborating closely with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the BC Coroners Service, and the Transportation Safety Board to determine the cause of the crash. Further investigations will shed light on the events leading up to the tragic incident.
This devastating helicopter crash serves as a grim reminder of the risks associated with heli-skiing adventures in the mountainous regions of British Columbia. As the investigations continue, authorities and outdoor activity operators will work together to ensure the safety and well-being of enthusiasts who choose to explore the backcountry.
