Numerous rain showers are moving into the Houston area from the west, increasing the threat of heavy rainfall and potential street flooding for the next few days, according to meteorologists. A Stage 1 flood alert has been implemented to prepare for the significant rainfall.

An upper-level storm system is slowly approaching the region, resulting in widespread showers and thunderstorms to the west of Houston. These showers are expected to spread across the metro area throughout the day, with rain chances near 100 percent due to a saturated atmosphere and favorable lifting conditions.

Meteorologists predict that most areas, including the Brazos Valley and Galveston, could experience rainfall accumulations ranging from 1 to 4 inches by the end of the day. Fortunately, individual storm cells are anticipated to move quickly from west to east, reducing the risk of "training" storms. There may be a brief break in rain showers tonight or overnight, but a second round of showers is expected to arrive early on Tuesday.

After a cold weekend, temperatures are expected to rise as warmer air surges into the region. Highs today should reach the low- to mid-60s, with nighttime temperatures hovering around 60 degrees. Winds will also be noticeable, blowing from the southeast at speeds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.

According to meteorologists, the setup might result in higher rain totals north of Interstate 10 and further inland, rather than closer to the coast. However, much of the area is likely to receive an additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall on Tuesday. Temperatures will remain in the 60s to near 70 degrees. Another possible break in rain chances may occur during the evening or overnight hours.

Wednesday is anticipated to be the final day of widespread showers, although conditions may be slightly less favorable than on Monday and Tuesday. Rainfall is expected for most of the area, with totals ranging from around 0.5 to 2 inches. Highs will be in the upper 60s, and rainfall accumulations throughout these three days could reach 4 to 6 inches in some areas.

Following the rainy period, partly sunny days are forecasted for Thursday and Friday, with highs around 70 degrees, slightly lower humidity, and nighttime temperatures in the 50s. Rain chances may persist but decrease to about 20 to 30 percent each day.

Saturday could bring partly sunny skies with highs possibly in the 60s. A strong front is expected to pass through during the early morning hours or daytime, potentially accompanied by scattered rain. Lows will drop into the 40s, and Sunday is predicted to be sunny with highs around 60 degrees.

Looking ahead to next week, the weather appears to be relatively quiet, with temperatures in the 60s during the day and 40s during the night. Rain chances are expected to remain low at least until Wednesday or so, allowing for some much-needed drying out.

Meteorologists will closely monitor today's rainfall, and if there are any changes to the flooding expectations, updates will be provided accordingly.
