In a shocking turn of events, a scandal has rocked the world of record-breaking dogs, prompting Guinness World Records (GWR) to temporarily halt applications for the oldest dog living and oldest dog ever titles. A recent controversy has cast doubt on the validity of Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal, who was certified as the oldest dog living and the oldest dog ever by GWR.

Bobi, who was purportedly 30 years and 266 days old as of February 1, 2023, became a record holder with GWR. Tragically, the beloved canine passed away in October 2023, just a few months after celebrating his 31st birthday. Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who had met Bobi on multiple occasions, confirmed his death on Facebook and paid tribute to him.

The breed, Rafeiro do Alentejo, is known as a livestock watchdog and generally has an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, according to the American Kennel Club. This has raised suspicions about Bobi's extraordinary lifespan and whether he truly deserved the title of the oldest dog ever.

Interestingly, concerns have emerged regarding discrepancies in his appearance. Photos of Bobi as a young pup show him with white paws, while pictures of him in his later years depict him with brown paws. This inconsistency has fueled speculation and contributed to the ongoing doubts surrounding his record-breaking age.

As a result, GWR is taking these concerns seriously and has initiated a formal review of the record. This process includes examining existing evidence, gathering new evidence, seeking expert opinions, and contacting individuals associated with the original application. During this review period, all applications for oldest dog titles will remain on hold until the findings are thoroughly investigated and communicated.

It is essential to note that GWR has clarified that no actions have been taken against any record holders yet. Decisions regarding the titles will be made based on the outcome of the review. Reports suggesting that Bobi has been stripped of his title are currently unverified.

The dog-eat-dog world of record-breaking dogs has certainly been shaken by this controversy. GWR's decision to suspend applications underscores the importance of maintaining accuracy and authenticity in certifying remarkable achievements in the canine world. As the investigation unfolds, the truth behind Bobi's extraordinary age will be revealed, casting light on the integrity of records in the dog kingdom.
