Climate activist Greta Thunberg has expressed her dissatisfaction with the outcome of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) climate deal, calling it "yet another example of extremely vague and watered-down texts full of loopholes." Thunberg, who participated in a "Fridays for Future" protest outside parliament in Stockholm on December 15, prominently displayed a Palestinian flag and held a "Free Palestine" sign.

The COP28 agreement, adopted by nearly 200 countries, included mention of fossil fuels for the first time in its 28-year history. However, Thunberg argued that the agreement falls short in addressing the urgency of the climate crisis and achieving climate justice. She insisted that the deal is insufficient in staying within the 1.5° temperature limit and called for drastic immediate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

In a three-part tweet, Thunberg emphasized the need for binding commitments from major contributors to the climate crisis to finance adaptation, loss and damages, and a just transition in the most affected areas. She criticized the COP processes as providing an alibi for world leaders to make empty promises without taking substantial action.

Thunberg's fusion of the Palestinian cause with the climate change movement has garnered attention. In addition to waving the Palestinian flag and holding a "Free Palestine" sign, she has previously made statements in solidarity with Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war. However, her actions have sparked controversy, particularly in Israel, where she has been criticized for disregarding the lives lost during the October 7 Hamas massacre.

Thunberg's activism and outspokenness have made her a divisive figure. While some applaud her efforts and see her as a role model, others have spoken out against her. In response to her advocacy for the Palestinian cause, the Education Ministry in Israel announced the removal of any references to Thunberg as a "role model" from the national public school curriculum.

Despite the criticism and controversy surrounding her, Thunberg remains committed to fighting for climate justice and a sustainable future. She calls on world leaders to take immediate action and views the COP28 agreement as a betrayal that fails to address the urgency of the climate crisis. Thunberg's activism continues to make an impact as she advocates for meaningful change on a global scale.
