In a shocking incident, thieves targeted Lincoln Memorial Park in Carson, California, early last Friday, stealing more than 100 name plaques from gravestones, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. This follows a similar theft that occurred just a week prior at Woodlawn Celestial Gardens in Compton.
The burglars removed over a hundred bronze nameplates from mausoleum graves, as well as a significant plaque commemorating African American veterans of World War II. This historic plaque, donated by renowned boxer Joe Louis in 1944, held great sentimental value.
Aisha Woods, a community advocate, expressed her astonishment at the audacity of the thieves. One of the stolen plaques was found bent out of shape but not completely removed from the stone, indicating the force required to dislodge it. The thieves even left their tools next to a large bust of President Lincoln located in the veteran's memorial.
Authorities suspect that the thieves specifically target bronze items. It is believed that the stolen plaques are being pawned off to resellers or recycling companies. Aisha Woods expressed her concern and frustration at the lack of response from law enforcement and the community. She mentioned that families are now resorting to placing tape on their loved ones' graves as a temporary solution.
Efforts to involve the Veteran's Administration for assistance with maintenance, including the donation of a camera security system, have so far been unsuccessful. Woods emphasized the urgent need for public support, security measures, and cameras to deter further incidents of theft and vandalism. She expressed fears that if this trend continues, Lincoln Memorial Park might cease to be a place where people can visit and honor their deceased loved ones.
The theft of these name plaques not only robs families of their ability to pay tribute to their loved ones but also erases a part of Los Angeles County's history. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and help apprehend those responsible for these heartless acts.
