Atlanta, GA - Governor Brian P. Kemp made a significant announcement today regarding the support and appreciation for state employees and the safety of Georgia's schools. Joined by First Lady Marty Kemp, Speaker Jon Burns, and Chairman Matt Hatchett of the House Appropriations Committee, Governor Kemp revealed plans for a state employee retention pay supplement of $1,000 and increased funding for school safety measures.
The retention pay supplement will benefit approximately 112,000 state employees and 196,000 educators and school support staff across Georgia. It is a token of gratitude for their unwavering commitment and hard work in the face of the ongoing pandemic and other challenges. This pay supplement, scheduled to be received during the holiday season, reflects the administration's recognition of their indispensable services.
Governor Kemp's Amended FY 2024 budget, to be submitted to the General Assembly in January, will allocate around $330 million for the one-time pay supplements. Of this amount, $202 million will be designated for K-12 teachers and school support staff. Additionally, the budget will allocate over $100 million annually to enhance school security and safety measures in all public schools throughout the state.
The additional funding for school safety initiatives demonstrates the state's commitment to protecting students and establishing secure learning environments. Governor Kemp emphasized that this investment will benefit every part of Georgia and build upon the existing measures already in place to ensure classroom safety and support law enforcement efforts. It is part of an ongoing effort that includes the previously authorized $185 million allocated for school safety grants.
Under the previous grants, each public school received $30,000 in 2019 and an additional $50,000 earlier this year. In combination with these grants, the new funding will provide public schools with a total of $45,000 to invest in personnel or infrastructure improvements that enhance campus security.
Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones expressed his appreciation for Governor Kemp's support, emphasizing that the safety and well-being of students remain a top priority. He commended the additional funding for local school safety initiatives and highlighted his Georgia School Safety Initiative, announced in October, as a key effort to further strengthen school safety measures and make Georgia's schools the safest in the nation.
Speaker of the House Jon Burns also praised the announcement, applauding the commitment to school safety initiatives and the increased pay supplement for state employees. Speaker Burns emphasized the importance of creating safe and secure environments for all students to learn, grow, and explore. He expressed his eagerness to work collaboratively with colleagues in the Senate during the upcoming legislative session to ensure these priorities become a reality.
Governor Kemp's announcement reflects the government's recognition of the invaluable contributions of its employees. Moreover, it underscores the administration's dedication to prioritizing the safety and security of Georgia's schools. As the new fiscal year approaches, these initiatives aim to foster an environment of support and appreciation, fostering a stronger and safer Georgia for all its residents.
