GOP Rep. George Santos Faces Another Resolution for Expulsion Following Damning Ethics Committee Report

Embattled Republican Representative George Santos is facing yet another resolution to expel him from Congress. The resolution was filed by Republican Representative Michael Guest, Chairman of the House Ethics Committee, just one day after the committee released a scathing report. The report detailed a months-long probe that uncovered a "complex web of unlawful activity" involving Santos' campaign, personal, and business finances.
According to the report, Santos allegedly misused funds donated to his political campaign for personal expenses. The investigation revealed several questionable expenses, including $2,900 labeled for "Botox" and $10,000 spent at high-end stores like Ferragamo and Hermes. Santos strongly criticized the report, dismissing it as a "disgusting politicized smear." However, he also announced after the report's release that he would not seek reelection.
Chairman Guest stated that the evidence discovered by the committee is "more than sufficient" to warrant punishment, with expulsion being the most appropriate course of action. The resolution cites the committee's findings, as well as the criminal charges brought against Santos, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Additionally, it references the prosecution of Santos' campaign treasurer and a former fundraiser.
Filed electronically as the House adjourned for the Thanksgiving recess, the resolution is not a privileged resolution, meaning there is no immediate time constraint to bring it to the floor for a vote. However, this could change when lawmakers return on November 28.
In response, Santos has announced a news conference at the Capitol steps on November 30 and has encouraged all members to attend.
This marks the third attempt to expel Santos from Congress, a rare move that has only occurred five times in the House throughout U.S. history, the most recent being in 2002. The first expulsion attempt by Democrats in May was halted by Republicans, who referred the matter to the House Ethics Committee. The second attempt, led by fellow members of the New York Republican delegation, took place earlier this month but failed to secure the two-thirds majority required.
However, momentum appears to be building in favor of expulsion following the release of the House Ethics Committee's report. Several lawmakers who previously opposed the move, such as Colorado Republican Representative Ken Buck and Maryland Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin, have now expressed support for expulsion.
While House Speaker Mike Johnson has acknowledged the troubling findings of the committee's report, his office has not explicitly stated whether Santos should remain in office. As members from both parties prepare to return to Congress following the Thanksgiving break, Speaker Johnson urges all involved to consider the best interests of the institution as this matter continues to unfold.
As the resolution for expulsion looms, the political fate of Representative George Santos remains uncertain, and the House Ethics Committee's damning report continues to cast a shadow over his congressional career.
