In a heartwarming turn of events, Benito the giraffe has begun a 40-hour road trip from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico to his new home in Puebla state, 1,200 miles away. The four-year-old giraffe has faced a long and lonely journey, but thanks to the efforts of animal rights activists, he is on his way to a more suitable climate and the company of fellow giraffes.
Benito's story began when he was forced to leave his home at a zoo in Sinaloa due to jealousy. The presence of a couple of giraffes at the zoo threatened his safety, as zookeepers feared he would become territorial and potentially attack the younger Benito. Last year, he found himself residing in a city-run park in Ciudad Juarez, living a solitary life.
With temperatures dropping as low as 39 degrees in Ciudad Juarez, authorities and animal rights activists rallied together to ensure Benito's safe and comfortable journey. Benito, standing 16 feet tall, was gently placed inside a crate which was then strapped to the back of a flat-bed truck. A convoy consisting of police, environmental officials, and the National Guard accompanied him, ensuring all measures were taken to protect the giraffe.
Benito's crate was specially designed to allow his head to stick out through the top, while a frame provided insulation from the cold, wind, and rain. The crate's adjustable roof allowed it to pass smoothly under bridges during the lengthy journey. The tarp covering over Benito acted as a shield, preventing him from being overwhelmed by external stimuli such as noise and landscape speeding by.
As the departure from Ciudad Juarez took place, residents gathered to bid a fond farewell to the beloved giraffe. Emotions were high as a crane lifted the container holding Benito onto the truck, with many shouting, "We love you, Benito!"
After the 40-hour road trip, Benito will finally arrive at his new home, an animal park in Puebla state, where he will join a group of resident giraffes. He will have access to a larger space that closely resembles the natural habitat of giraffes. The campaign led by animal rights activists has been successful in providing Benito with a chance to experience both warmth and companionship.
Benito's incredible journey serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication shown by individuals and organizations working towards the welfare of animals. As he embarks on this new chapter, we hope that Benito finds happiness, friendship, and a life filled with warmth and love.
