In a bid to accelerate the approval process of Sweden's NATO membership, Germany is increasing pressure on Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán, whose ruling Fidesz party has delayed the ratification. A senior German official, speaking to reporters in Berlin on Tuesday, emphasized the importance of loyalty to the alliance and friendly behavior among EU states, urging for a swift decision.
While all other NATO members have approved Sweden's bid, Hungary remains the only country yet to provide its endorsement. Orbán officially expressed support for Sweden's candidacy in January, but the Hungarian parliament's validation is still pending. With Fidesz enjoying a comfortable majority in parliament, the approval is expected to be a mere formality.
Lars Kristersson, the Prime Minister of Sweden, has ruled out any further negotiations with Budapest regarding the membership bid. However, he has expressed willingness to meet with Orbán once Hungary's parliament ratifies the application. A senior German official asserted that such visits between EU partners are normal, but emphasized that they should not be contingent upon the approval process.
With mounting pressure from Germany and the rest of NATO, Hungary is expected to move swiftly to ratify Sweden's bid, strengthening the alliance's military capabilities and further aligning EU states. As the deadline for Hungary's decision approaches, the international community waits with anticipation for a positive outcome that will solidify Sweden's place in the NATO family.
