The incident, which occurred at Warner Robins Middle School on December 7, was reported by another teacher, leading to Benjamin Reese, a seventh-grade social studies teacher, being apprehended.
According to an incident report obtained by ABC News from the Houston County Sheriff's Office, Reese was reported for angrily yelling at three students in a school hallway. Witnesses, including teachers, staff members, and students, claimed to have overheard him shouting expletives and making threats towards the targeted student.
The incident unfolded when the student approached Reese about the Israeli flag hanging in his classroom and questioned its presence. Reese stated that he was of Jewish heritage and had family members currently residing in Israel. However, the student expressed offense, citing concerns about "Israelis killing Pakistanians." It remains unclear from the report whether the student or the responding officer meant to refer to "Palestinians" instead of "Pakistanians" given the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
According to the student's account, Reese became agitated and approached her, attempting to prevent her from leaving and demanding to know her identity and first-period teacher. The student complied before walking away with two classmates. As they departed, Reese allegedly continued to yell, although the specific remarks were not discernible.
The incident report documented further details, including Reese's alleged claim that the student had made an antisemitic comment towards him. Witnesses from neighboring classrooms reported hearing Reese proclaim, "You don't make an antisemitic comment like that to a Jew." The student reportedly responded unfavorably, but was not yelling. Witnesses also stated that Reese continued to yell at the student as she left the classroom and walked down the hallway.
In a concerning turn of events, Reese allegedly made a threatening statement upon returning to the classroom, stating that he would drag the student into the parking lot and slit her throat. The report noted that numerous students and faculty members expressed concern following these reported outbursts.
Reese initially denied speaking to anyone in the hallway, but later admitted to interacting with a student who expressed offense over the Israeli flag. He claimed that the student was being antisemitic and insisted that he had not made any racist remarks. When questioned further, Reese invoked his civil rights and refused to provide any additional information.
Video surveillance footage from the hallway captured both Reese's presence and the students involved walking away, with one student glancing back at Reese. Unfortunately, the footage does not include audio of the incident.
Reese was subsequently arrested and has since been released on bond. The Houston County School District stated that Reese has not been present at Warner Robins Middle School since the date of the incident. The district emphasized their commitment to investigating violations of the Code of Ethics for Educators and prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and staff.
ABC News reached out to Reese for comment but received no immediate response.
