In the midst of the escalating conflict in Gaza, a doctor from the besieged territory has spoken out about the dire conditions faced by hospitals and healthcare professionals trying to save lives. Dr. Hammam Alloh, an internal medicine and nephrology specialist at Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest hospital in Gaza, has shed light on the heartbreaking choices being made due to rapidly dwindling supplies.

As Israeli tanks and ground forces enter Gaza, Dr. Alloh described the overwhelming influx of people seeking shelter from the heavy bombardment. With limited resources, he recounted the agonizing decision of not resuscitating a patient in cardiac arrest due to a shortage of ventilators. He emphasized the dedication of medical professionals, stating that their commitment to their patients extends beyond their own lives.

The escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza has garnered increasing alarm from top United Nations officials. The last remaining hospitals in the enclave are on the verge of shutting down due to a lack of fuel, while Israel continues its ground invasion and rejects calls for a humanitarian ceasefire. Palestinian health officials have reported over 8,500 deaths during the 26-day conflict, with the majority being women and children.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees), has reiterated the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire. He describes the current siege on Gaza as collective punishment, with basic services crumbling, medicine running out, and food, water, and fuel becoming increasingly scarce. The deteriorating conditions have led to overflowing sewage on the streets, posing a significant health hazard to the already vulnerable population.

The situation in Gaza's hospitals is critical. Dr. Moaeen al-Masry from the Indonesian Hospital in north Gaza explained the immediate threat to patients' lives as damage to the hospital infrastructure cuts off necessary resources. The Turkish Hospital, the only cancer facility in Gaza, has also been targeted by Israeli attacks, further jeopardizing the lives of patients in need of critical care.

Dr. Alloh's firsthand account reveals the mounting challenges faced by healthcare workers at Al-Shifa Hospital. Limited aid deliveries have only provided minimal relief, with essential medical devices and medications still in critically short supply. The hospital is overwhelmed with patients, including those who should not be there, as the influx of injured individuals further strains resources.

The urgency for international intervention and support is undeniable. The limited aid trucks allowed into Gaza do not match the scale of the crisis, and the consequences are dire. Dr. Alloh implores the United States, as a superpower country, to take immediate action and end the war in order to save the lives of those suffering in Gaza. The plea for justice and humanity resonates as the death toll continues to rise, leaving the people of Gaza in a state of desperation.
