Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney issued a stark warning on Monday, expressing her belief that former President Donald Trump would refuse to leave office if he were to win a second term in the upcoming presidential election. Speaking during an interview on NBC's "Today," Cheney emphasized that the preservation of democracy in the United States hinges on the outcome of the upcoming election.

Cheney, who was once a rising star within the Republican Party and a potential future speaker, noted that Trump had already attempted to seize power during his first term. She highlighted the importance of recognizing that a vote for Trump in the election as the GOP nominee could have serious consequences.

During the interview, Cheney stated, "There's no question. Absolutely. He's already done it once... He's already attempted to seize power, and he was stopped, thankfully, for the good of the nation and the republic." She further emphasized Trump's lack of remorse for his previous actions.

The former congresswoman underscored the need for undecided voters to understand that a vote for Trump is not in the best interest of the country. Cheney noted, "[T]hat choice can never be Donald Trump because a vote for Donald Trump may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in."

Cheney, who is set to release her forthcoming book titled "Oath and Honor" on Tuesday, has been an outspoken critic of Trump since the January 6 attack on the Capitol. She voted to impeach the former president for incitement of insurrection and continually voiced her concerns over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

As a member of the House January 6 committee, Cheney played a prominent role in seeking accountability for the violence that marred the certification of President Joe Biden's victory. However, her vocal opposition to Trump ultimately led to her removal from party leadership by the Republican caucus.

In August 2022, Cheney sought renomination as the GOP nominee for her at-large seat but lost the primary to Representative Harriet Hageman.

The warning issued by Cheney serves as a reminder of the ongoing political divisions within the Republican Party and the potential threat posed by a second term for Donald Trump. The upcoming election will certainly be a critical moment for democracy in the United States, as voters decide the future direction of the nation and the preservation of its democratic values.
