In a recent interview with CNN's Kate Bolduan, former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger criticized Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan for what he described as hypocrisy regarding the treatment of subpoenas and contempt of Congress proceedings. Kinzinger accused Jordan of being an "absolute hypocrite" for threatening to hold Hunter Biden in contempt for defying a congressional subpoena, despite Jordan himself having done the same thing in the past.
Kinzinger pointed out that Jordan advocated for the "sanctity of the subpoena" when it served his interests but was quick to disregard it when he became the one facing a subpoena. Kinzinger also highlighted Jordan's voting history, noting that he opposed enforcing subpoenas against figures such as Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows. The former lawmaker emphasized the "mind-numbing" extent of Jordan's hypocrisy.
The feud between Jordan and Kinzinger ignited after weeks of tension surrounding Hunter Biden's scheduled deposition before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. On Wednesday, Biden briefly appeared at the Capitol, opting to make a public statement outside the building instead of proceeding with the deposition as planned. In response, Committee Chair James Comer and Jordan threatened Biden, stating that the subpoenas compelled his appearance and that failure to comply would result in initiating contempt of Congress proceedings.
Kinzinger lashed out at Jordan, accusing him of adopting a double standard in his handling of the situation. The former lawmaker noted how Jordan had previously supported former President Trump during his impeachment inquiries, arguing that the Department of Justice or the FBI should conduct investigations. Kinzinger criticized Jordan's shift in stance, highlighting what he perceived as inconsistency.
During his statement outside the Capitol, Hunter Biden defended his father and vehemently denied any involvement in his business dealings. Biden stated that he was willing to testify publicly but opposed a closed-door deposition as requested by investigators.
The GOP seized on Biden's refusal to attend the private meeting as further justification for their impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Kinzinger, however, accused Jordan and others within the party of prioritizing their own political agenda over truth and justice. He argued that their actions amounted to a "fishing expedition" aimed at finding evidence against the president.
Kinzinger expressed his concern over the lack of integrity displayed by certain Republicans, emphasizing that he prioritizes honesty and fairness over policy disagreements. He criticized their focus on winning and exercising power, suggesting that truth and justice had become secondary considerations.
The House Republicans' push for Hunter Biden's testimony is part of a broader impeachment inquiry into President Biden, with a special focus on his son's foreign business dealings. The House is scheduled to commence its inquiry later on Wednesday with a vote on the matter.
