In a recent radio interview on "The Dan Bongino Show," former President Donald Trump expressed his desire to engage in a debate with President Joe Biden ahead of the upcoming general election. Trump emphasized the importance of debating for the benefit of the country and called for an immediate face-off with his White House successor.
Reacting to Trump's challenge, President Biden, during a stop in Nevada, responded with a touch of humor, stating that he understood why Trump would want to debate him as he seemed to have nothing else to do. This exchange follows Trump's earlier statement in a December interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt where he expressed his willingness to debate Biden.
During his interview with Hewitt, Trump floated the idea of having ten debates with Biden, demonstrating his eagerness to engage in a series of discussions. However, the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced in 2022 that it would withdraw from the presidential debates organized by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates. Instead, the RNC vowed to require Republican presidential candidates to participate solely in debates sanctioned by the Republican Party.
Trump, remaining critical of the Commission on Presidential Debates, described it as "corrupt" and alleged that his microphone was turned off during a general election debate in 2016. Additionally, Trump claimed that during the 2020 presidential campaign, the organization decided to cut off his microphone while Biden was answering questions.
The Commission on Presidential Debates has already announced the dates and locations for three general election debates in 2024. However, the Biden campaign has yet to comment on the proposed schedule. In the previous 2020 election, only two general election debates took place out of the customary three, with one debate being canceled due to Trump contracting Covid-19.
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Trump's only remaining significant GOP opponent, has criticized him for not participating in debates during the primary season. Haley's campaign responded to Trump's recent debate comments by urging him to also agree to debate her, presenting her conservative record and vision for America.
As the debate over debates continues, it remains to be seen whether Trump's challenge will be accepted by President Biden and if additional debates will transpire in the lead-up to the 2024 general election.
