Jerusalem, November 14, 2021 (AP) - Galit Distel Atbaryan, a former member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Cabinet, has publicly acknowledged her role in fostering internal divisions that contributed to the October 7 attack by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip. In a rare display of accountability from a member of Netanyahu's Likud Party, Distel Atbaryan expressed regret for her actions and accepted responsibility for the polarized atmosphere that preceded the devastating war currently ongoing for almost three months.

Addressing the nation, Distel Atbaryan voiced the belief that the internal strife created an impression of weakness, ultimately encouraging Hamas to launch the attack. This marks one of the first occasions where a Likud member has openly acknowledged their part in the tense climate leading up to the violent incident.

Distel Atbaryan specifically took accountability for her involvement in the large-scale protests and civil discord that erupted following Netanyahu's administration's attempt to implement a comprehensive reform of the judicial system. The crisis sparked nationwide demonstrations and caused alarm among business leaders and former security chiefs. It also raised concerns among close allies, including the United States.

As the public diplomacy minister during this tumultuous period, Distel Atbaryan gained prominence for her vocal support of Netanyahu and her outspoken criticism of his adversaries. However, she now recognizes the negative consequences of such confrontational rhetoric amidst escalating tensions.

Distel Atbaryan further expressed disappointment in the wasteful use of public funds during the ongoing wartime. Despite her acknowledgment of her role in the internal strife, she has decided to continue serving as a member of parliament within the Likud Party.

The rare public apology by Distel Atbaryan demonstrates a willingness to take responsibility and reflect on the ways in which internal divisions can contribute to precarious situations. It also highlights the importance of fostering unity and fostering a stable political environment during times of heightened conflict.

With the war entering its third month, the acceptance of accountability by a former Likud member may contribute to efforts aimed at healing internal divisions, allowing the country to focus on reaching a long-lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict.
